In the final years of the Zhenguan era of the Great Tang, the stars above Chang’an suddenly shift. After observing the heavens through the night, the Imperial Astronomical Bureau’s chief collapses and never recovers. With his dying breath, he leaves behind only the names of twelve mysterious hours.
At Zi hour, plague strikes. At Chou hour, a ship sinks. At Yin hour, fire breaks out. At Mao hour, the imperial examinations are rigged... Disasters coil around the twelve hours like poisonous vines, all pointing straight at the dynasty’s lifeblood.
A female coroner opens up the first corpse, found at Zi hour, and discovers a star chart tattoo. A disciple of the Bureau of Yin and Yang ventures to the Ghost Market at night and buys a “Hourglass Dial” that can reveal the future. A failed scholar finds a prophecy of the dynasty’s downfall hidden among the cheat sheets at the Mao-hour examinations. A veteran general returning from the frontier to report for duty discovers that the troop transfer order issued by the Ministry of War at Yin hour bears an old seal supposedly destroyed three years earlier...
When the ominous stars of all twelve hours form a diagram for regicide, can they unravel the heaven-defying killing plot engraved in time before the shadow of the sundial catches up with the dragon throne?
