Xiaoming's Nighttime Roadside Horrors consists of five stories: On the seventh night of the seventh lunar month, he ignores the taboos and goes out, only to encounter a bride in red demanding his life; while playing "coffin hide-and-seek," his companions disappear one by one into the coffins of an old mansion; after picking up a red cord by the river, he is dragged into nightmares by a water ghost night after night; he disrespects the mountain god's temple by urinating there, and strange things begin happening after the statue fixes its gaze on him; and, on a dark road, he encounters a "shoulder-tapping ghost" and glimpses a faceless shadow the instant he turns around. Each story takes a folk taboo as its starting point, portraying Xiaoming's terrifying encounters with the supernatural and his struggles with human nature.
