Parting Sorrows: Conquering the South Seas

On barren land, generations ago, our ancestors journeyed south across the seas to make a living, leaving behind a story of love and resentment. War severed all contact, and Grandfather died far from home. Grandmother kept vigil alone in the old house for half a century, locking letters from overseas, silver dollars, and despair in an iron box. Half a century later, the eldest uncle returned from Thailand, and the brothers recognized each other as one lay dying. Grandmother never opened the door before she died. At last, the rusty lock gave way, revealing bloodstained silver dollars and a letter never sent. The hope locked away and never opened had become a cold monument to a century of separation.
