Siheyuan: Life Among the Smoke and Fire

When he opened his eyes, he had become “Silly Zhu” in a Beijing courtyard compound in 1954.

A greasy stove, a little sister who barely spoke, and the “Qin Huairu vortex” in his memories, destined to drag him into the mire... He Yuzhu, a junior kitchen assistant at the steel mill, now had a clear-eyed soul from seventy years in the future.

He knew better than anyone how much scheming, selfishness, and bleakness lay beneath the lively facade of Love in the Courtyard.

In this life, he would never again be the muddleheaded “Silly Zhu.”

His first step toward building a life was to hold on to the light cutting through the gloom: Ran Qiuye, a young teacher at the district elementary school. She was well-read and reasonable, yet her eyes held a clarity untouched by the world. “Literacy is a window that opens onto the world,” she said, perfectly in tune with his determination to protect his little sister and help her grow up safe and wise.

In a winter filled with coal-stove smoke and the scent of ink, two hearts drawn to “living right” and “finding the light” quietly grew closer.
