The Microscope in the Wheat Fields of Shankaka

In the 1980s, in Linjiawan Village, Lin Xiaomai grows up in a poor but close-knit mountain community. Watching villagers help one another bring in the wheat harvest and share stories as they escape the summer heat, she dreams of one day leaving the mountains. Her education is an uphill struggle: her village school has no electric lights, students at the town middle school mock her for being a country bumpkin, and at the county high school, poverty leaves her chewing on cold steamed buns. But the encouragement of her teacher, Mr. Chen, and an older schoolmate, Zhou Chunmei, keeps her going. Before Zhou Chunmei is forced to leave school and marry, she slips Lin Xiaomai her notes and says, "Keep studying for me." At university, Lin Xiaomai faces discrimination in the lab, but distinguishes herself after discovering a unique component in her hometown's soil. She spends every winter and summer break teaching in the village, making teaching aids from bamboo tubes and mud to help the children explore science. When the media publicizes her work, the public is in an uproar. Some question whether "rural people can do scientific research," while others are deeply moved. After earning her doctorate, she turns down a high-paying job and returns home with a "Rural Science and Technology Innovation Plan." Zhang Shitou, once dismissed as a "foolish child," becomes her teaching assistant. Her stubborn grandfather offers up his treasured farming books, while her city friends Li Mengqi and Liu Ming bring resources. The once-forgotten mountain village builds a laboratory and an e-commerce platform, becoming a "model village for science and technology."

In the finale, Lin Xiaomai stands on the playground as a drone takes off, watching the children chase the shifting light and shadows. She says softly, "This is only the beginning." Knowledge changes one's fate, but one's roots determine where the soul belongs.
