When the Commonwealth, a “bastion of rebirth” with electricity and an army, bares its fangs, its oppressive hierarchy and ambitions of conquest become impossible to hide. Lin Feng leads his army in a desperate defense of the border, Merle tears through enemy ranks with twin knives, and Negan offers a poisonous plan to break their spirits. Sabotage behind enemy lines, a popular uprising, and a clash of technology: the fire of freedom spreads like wildfire. On the night the Commonwealth's walls fall, Mercer switches sides and Pamela takes her own life, signaling the end of tyranny.

The new “United Community” rises from scorched earth: Morgan teaches nonlethal self-defense, Carol plants flowers at the orphanage, and Merle and Negan, once sworn enemies, stand watch together in the snowy northern frontier. The younger generation takes up the torch of civilization: Carl teaches combat, Lydia learns to identify herbs, and Hershel runs through fields of wheat.
