Overworked office drone Li Huailin drops dead at his desk after another bout of overtime, only to open his eyes as a little black dog atop Mount Tai. As the plot of Shrouding the Heavens unfolds in his mind, he takes on the guise of the Black Emperor and begins his comeback journey from stray dog on Earth to divine-domain menace: in Beidou, he scams Origin Crystals with a worthless rock; on the Ancient Starry Road, he steals spirit wine and pranks Duan De; in the divine domain, he uses a “nameless-brand fake inheritance” to fool the immortals left and right.
This Black Emperor is no ordinary dog. He carries compressed biscuits in his mouth as he scams Ye Fan, and a swipe of his claws can conjure the phantom of the Wu Shi Bell. He’s full of memorable lines when he’s cheating and conning: “Woof, woof! You immortal soldiers think you can block this emperor’s way?” From tricking the Old Lunatic into giving him a lucky break to standing against the Dark Immortal Emperor to protect Ye Fan, he turns scamming into an art. He pretends to sniff out demonic energy in an innate spirit root to swindle immortal crystals, gets struck by lightning after drawing a Dao pattern wrong but stubbornly insists he was “testing the Heavenly Dao,” and even opens a “School for Scammers,” teaching spirit beasts to use “nameless-brand tricks” to fool Immortal Kings.
When rifts between worlds open, the Black Emperor leads his pack across realms to stir up trouble. In the Perfect World, he steals fragments of Shi Hao’s Supreme Bone and is chased all over the wilderness by the Little Pagoda. On Earth in Sacred Ruins, he gives Chu Feng the wrong directions so Chu Feng digs up scrap metal while he secretly steals an energy core. After fusing the energy of multiple worlds, he tears space apart with his claws, his imperial might shaking the heavens. At last, he establishes the “Headquarters for Scams Across the Heavens” in the divine domain, leaving behind the legend: “Wherever there’s a world, there’s a Black Emperor scam.”
This is an absurd epic of an overworked office drone’s rise to power: from Earth to the divine domain, from puppy to emperor, the Black Emperor shows what it means to reach the pinnacle of doghood with his smooth talk and claws. He’s swindled saints and immortal emperors, conned immortals and spirit beasts, and protected his brothers in the dog pack, living a “dog’s life” more exciting than any human’s.
