Fan Jinlian's tragic end in the original work has been controversial, and it is entirely due to his own reasons. There are some, but not many. Basically it is driven by external forces. To the regret of countless readers, this book ends with Jin Lian and Qing Yue working hard after time travel and finally having her happy ending.
