Lady Liang Hongyu, Defender of the Nation

Liang Hongyu was born in Huai’an, Jiangsu, and was a renowned anti-Jin heroine of the Southern Song dynasty. Both her grandfather and father were military officers, and she learned martial arts from her father and brothers from a young age. After her father and brothers were convicted for their part in suppressing Fang La’s rebellion, her family fell into ruin and she was forced to work as a camp entertainer in Jingkou. She later met Han Shizhong and, moved by his kindness, bought her freedom and became his concubine. After his first wife, Lady Bai, died, Liang became his principal wife. In 1129, during the Miao Fu rebellion, she rode hundreds of miles through the night to summon Han Shizhong to put down the revolt. For her service, she was given the titles Lady of Anguo and Lady Protector of the State. In 1130, during the Battle of Huangtiandang, she personally beat the war drums and directed a naval force of eight thousand as they trapped Jin Wuzhu’s army of one hundred thousand for 48 days. Her victory against overwhelming odds shook the imperial court. She later accompanied her husband to defend Chuzhou, where she drilled the troops, built up defenses, and organized farming, turning the city into a shield for the north bank of the Yangtze. In 1135, while fighting the Jin army on the front line at Chuzhou, she was ambushed and gravely wounded in the abdomen. Even with her intestines wrapped up, she continued fighting until she collapsed and died at the age of 33. Liang Hongyu was both wise and brave, and maintained strict discipline among her troops. The Southern Song court posthumously honored her as Lady of Bin, while the people revered her as a model of female heroism who “beat the drums to drive back the Jin.” Her story has been celebrated in works such as the opera The Battle of Jinshan. Emperor Gaozong of Song praised her, saying, “Her wisdom and strategy are without equal in the histories.” Her extraordinary life demonstrated the vital role women in ancient times could play in defending their homeland.
