Birch Whispers Through the Forest

Lin Wan dies suddenly during a livestream and wakes up in the wilderness of the Greater Khingan Range in 1983.

To survive, she carves birch bark to create the “Reindeer River-Crossing Box,” using an order for a thousand items from Russian merchants to break through the state-owned factory’s blockade.

To protect his wife, the Evenki hunter Batu digs a bullet out of himself on a snowy night and drives off the wolves. He cuts off his braid and ties it around her wrist: “You are my life.”

To keep her promise, she drapes red silk over the gun: “When it fires, I’ll follow.”

From a home with nothing to her name to an intangible cultural heritage study-tour base, deep inside the silent birch bark, a spring that will never fade is carved.
