In 1973, Ye Zaozao, a technical-school graduate of the provincial mechanical engineering institute, falls victim to Feng Lei's scheme and becomes embroiled in a public scandal that destroys her reputation. Over the next thirty years, Ye Zaozao faces discrimination and suppression because of her gender, but takes the lead in reforming the factory and helps Qin Xiangxi set up a clothing factory after the launch of reform and opening up. As family-planning policies take effect and they venture into business, Ye Zaozao and Qin Xiangxi's marriage only grows stronger amid the changing times.
