The Bizarre Records: A Compendium of Folk Hauntings

Desperate for money, Li Xiaopang took a job as a haunted-house sleep tester.

The real estate agent said the previous tester had only “left temporarily,” but Li found half a bowl of moldy braised pork in the fridge.

At midnight, the sound of bones being chopped came from the kitchen.

He held his breath and pretended to be dead. Then a hoarse voice whispered in his ear, “Don’t pretend. I saw you sneaking a bite of my meat.”

The next day, he stuffed the money in his pocket and tried to run, but the whole building suddenly twisted out of shape.

Every window turned into a blood-red eye, staring at him.

The last text on his phone read: “Welcome to your new role as a substitute. We’re always short-staffed.”
