The hospital lights were blindingly pale. Su Mu sat on the bench outside the operating room, holding a bronze pocket watch in both hands - it was the last gift Zhou Chen gave her. The cracks on the dial spread like a spider web, and the hour and minute hands were forever stopped at 3:17, the moment when the car accident occurred.
"Zhou Chen's family members?" The door of the operating room opened and the doctor wearing a blue mask came out.
Su Mu stood up suddenly, her pocket watch hot in her palm. "I am his wife, doctor. How is he?"
The doctor took off his mask, revealing a tired face. "We tried our best. The patient's spine was severely damaged and his internal organs were bleeding... It's a pity..."
Su Mu couldn't hear the rest of the words clearly. Her world collapsed at that moment, leaving only a sharp buzzing in her ears. The last thing she remembered was that she collapsed on the ground and the pocket watch slipped from her fingers, making a crisp sound.
---
The funeral was held on a rainy afternoon. Su Mu was wearing a black dress and stood in front of the tombstone, rainwater and tears sliding down her cheeks. The photo of Zhou Chen smiling on the tombstone was taken by her when they were traveling in Barcelona last year. He was standing in front of the Sagrada Familia, and the sunlight gilded him with a layer of gold.
"What were the last words he said?" Zhou Chen's friend Chen Yan asked in a low voice.
Su Mu's fingertips unconsciously rubbed the pocket watch hanging around her neck. "He said... Let me live well."
