At Thirty-Six, I’m Sorry, I Ruined Everything

At thirty-six, I had become a complete joke.

I’d been with my girlfriend, Lin Xue, for sixteen years. She stayed by my side as we struggled up from nothing until I became head of sales at my company, yet I came to resent her for growing old and being a nag.

The night I got drunk at a business dinner, she clutched the pregnancy test she’d just taken and tried to talk to me about getting married. I found her annoying and shoved her to the ground.

The back of her head struck the edge of the coffee table. When she woke up, she had forgotten all sixteen years we’d spent together.

I was out of my mind. I lied and told her we were only roommates, then hid every photo and keepsake we shared, just wanting to escape a relationship I’d grown tired of.

It wasn’t until I watched her rediscover her hobbies, take up gardening and fishkeeping, and dress up beautifully, and saw another man come to pick her up for dates, that I finally came to my senses.

I had pushed away the girl who’d spent her entire youth betting on a future with me.

Worse still, the company was undergoing a major transformation, and the sales department I’d led for years was being disbanded. The two older brothers who had once treated me like their own little brother seemed ready to give up on me, too.

My love life was over, my career was about to collapse, and it wasn’t until my thirty-sixth birthday that I realized I’d ruined my entire life.

To hell with a midlife crisis!

This time, even if I have to get down on my knees, I’ll win back the woman I lost with my own hands!

My brothers and I will make every boast we made back then come true, one by one!
