I Solve Cases Through My Ancestors' Dreams

Ghosts and Gods + Mystery + Crime Solving

Lin Mo is an exemplary top student at the police academy, raised to believe that science is the only truth. But on his very first day at the city criminal investigation department, a bizarre "welcome gift" shatters his worldview. His great-grandfather, who has been dead for over a century, appears in Qing Dynasty official robes, pats him on the shoulder in a dream, and says, "Good grandson, the secret to our Lin family's success in criminal investigations is having someone down below!"

Lin Mo dismisses it as an absurd dream. But when the first bizarre dismemberment case he takes on hits a dead end, the victim's incomplete soul appears trembling at his bedside, pointing with its only remaining finger toward the mass grave on the west side of town... Even more outrageous, the talismans and incantations in his great-grandfather's battered old manual, Records of Yin Talismans for Apprehending Criminals, really can "communicate between the worlds of the living and the dead"!

From then on, Lin Mo's career takes a dramatic turn:

By day, he is a calm, rational rising star in criminal investigation, searching for clues with fingerprints, DNA, and criminal profiling.

By night, he becomes a switchboard operator between "the worlds of yin and yang," forced to take "helpful" reports from ghosts, listen to the bloodcurdling pleas of wronged spirits, and even bargain with stubborn old ghosts who refuse to leave their homes for clues.

An exorcist family comes to him, saying he has the rare "Underworld Official" constitution, seen only once in a century. An old Maoshan Taoist wants to take him as a disciple, claiming his darkened brow means he is doomed to face the "Calamity of a Hundred Ghosts." A mysterious Gu sorceress slips a "Love Gu" into his water, just to get him to help find a lost century-old love Gu...

Behind one seemingly ordinary case after another lie ancient curses and dark arts, long-buried family feuds, and ferocious ghosts raised in captivity.
