During the Xuanhe era of the Northern Song dynasty, imperial guard instructor Su Yuxiao is sent on a mission. As he passes through a dark, secluded forest, he hears a series of pitiful cries. Following the sound, he finds a wounded little fox surrounded by a pack of jackals. A superb martial artist, Su Yuxiao drives them off, rescues the fox, and bandages its wounds. Once recovered, the little fox gazes deeply at him, then disappears into the forest.
Afterward, the little fox devotes itself to cultivation. A thousand years pass in the blink of an eye, and just as it is about to ascend to immortality, it is suddenly overcome by an inner demon and falls into dire peril. At the critical moment, it senses a lingering trace of Su Yuxiao’s aura drawing it toward him and follows it to the Su family ancestral shrine. There, Bai Wan uses the warding jade pendant Su Yuxiao left behind to dispel the inner demon and successfully ascend to immortality. To repay Su Yuxiao for saving its life, Bai Wan promises that if any of his descendants are gifted with a spiritual root and able to become a spirit medium, she will do everything in her power to help them banish demons and save lives.
In modern times, Su Lingxi is born different from ordinary people, with a particular sensitivity to supernatural matters. When she is twenty, evil spirits suddenly invade her home. Bai Wan appears to help and reveals the connection between them in a past life. With Bai Wan’s help, Su Lingxi performs the spirit-medium initiation ritual and officially becomes a spirit medium. Together with Bai Wan, she begins tackling one supernatural case after another and helping ordinary people out of trouble. Along the way, they grow stronger and gradually uncover a plot by a mysterious force lurking in the shadows, bent on disrupting the order between yin and yang.
