The Happy Life of a Female College Student in the 1980s

[Family and Everyday Life] Ever since Song Siyu became the factory's first bona fide college graduate, her name has never been out of people's mouths around the factory compound. She became the hottest topic of conversation over tea. As soon as she got into college, the snide comments started: “Well, she did get into college, but just look at the school she applied to. Tsk, it's nowhere near the top tier! Still, she made it through graduation and got assigned a job at a good workplace. And then the gossip immediately started again: “How could a girl like her get assigned to a place like that? She must have connections! So-and-so must have put in a word or pulled some strings for her! Jobs like that are so hard to come by these days. Without connections, how would she get one?” It was as if I'd wasted four years studying and owed everything to other people's favors.

Even later, when it came to marriage, she couldn't escape the gossip. If her partner was a good catch, people would purse their lips sourly and say, “Look at her. College graduates really are cleverer than monkeys! She's snagged herself a rich branch to climb, hasn't she? Tsk, what a sharp eye. She was clearly shrewd even as a child!” She'd supposedly gone from rags to riches overnight, transforming into a phoenix.

Sitting on Qi Zekai's lap, Song Siyu complained, “Honey, they all say I'm not good enough for you, and that I only married you because your dad is the factory director.”

Qi Zekai pulled the woman in his arms close. “Wifey, they're just jealous of you.”

It didn't take long for those people to change their tune again: The Qi family really does have a good eye for wives!

Qi Zekai looked at his wife, who had just come home after a busy day. “Wifey, I relied on my dad in the first half of my life, and now I rely on you. Am I going to end up living off our son later?”

Song Siyu stepped forward to comfort him. “Don't worry, honey. It just means you're lucky.”
