In 1939, during Shanghai’s isolated-island period, Cheng Yanzhou is framed by Japanese and puppet-government agents and reduced to menial work in an opera troupe. By chance, he activates the Spy Shadow Advancement System. Taking on assassination, intelligence theft, and defection missions issued by the System, he rises from a good-for-nothing drudge whom anyone can bully, gradually disguising himself as a translator for the Wang Jingwei regime, an adviser to the Japanese army’s intelligence division, and more. He moves among the Military Statistics Bureau, Japanese intelligence agents, the Green Gang, and the concession police. Along the way, he forms bonds with several women, including an undercover female agent for the Military Statistics Bureau, the daughter of a high-ranking Wang Jingwei official, and an antiwar Japanese doctor. When he takes on the System’s ultimate mission, “Shadow’s Swordbearer,” he becomes entangled in real historical events: sabotaging the Japanese army’s “Village-Cleansing Campaign,” intercepting intelligence on Unit 731’s germ warfare, and ultimately rewriting the course of Shanghai’s shadow war as a legendary spy.
