Seascapes

The train on the Shanghai-Nanjing line in late autumn 1939 was like a lone boat drifting through treacherous currents. Lin Pingyi, a newly appointed Juntong agent codenamed “Goshawk,” was disguised as a returning businessman, warily surveying everything around him. Meanwhile, Ming Zhi, a Chinese Communist underground intelligence agent codenamed “Dove,” had been betrayed and was carrying top-secret intelligence on the Japanese army’s river defenses. Hounded by Juntong agents, she stumbled in panic into Lin Qiong’s compartment. One was a Juntong elite entrusted with a special mission; the other was an underground Communist trapped in a desperate situation. Though on opposing sides, the two had no choice but to form a temporary alliance in the cramped space.

As the train roared onward, Japanese agents, the Wang Jingwei regime, and Juntong forces closed in one after another. From covert clashes in the dining car to deadly fights between carriages, each brush with death took them from wary probing to seamless cooperation. In the sealed, danger-ridden space, their ideals and convictions quietly began to resonate, yet their differing beliefs still seemed like an impassable chasm between them. With Nanjing drawing near, Juntong’s all-out assault forced them to make the ultimate choice: hold fast to their respective missions, or join hands for the greater good of the nation? A heart-pounding contest over intelligence, belief, and emotion was about to erupt aboard the speeding train.
