Defying Fate: The Second Round

The blinding lights shone straight into Ning Yi’s eyes. He raised a hand to shield them, but couldn’t block the contemptuous stares coming from every direction. Standing in the middle of the banquet hall in his fine suit, he felt as if thorns were pricking him from all sides. On the projection screen, one forged document after another clearly displayed his supposed “evidence of guilt.”

“An investigation has confirmed that Ning Yi abused his position to steal company secrets and falsify transaction records, causing the Zhou Group losses of more than 200 million yuan...” The host’s icy voice echoed throughout the hall.

Ning Yi whipped around to look at the two people standing side by side onstage: his wife, Su Meng, and his best friend, Zhou Minghui. Su Meng wore a red dress and looked stunning, but there was none of her former tenderness in her eyes, only bone-chilling indifference. Zhou Minghui stood immaculate in his suit, the eyes behind his gold-rimmed glasses gleaming with triumph.

“Why?” Ning Yi’s lips trembled, his voice hoarse.

Zhou Minghui took the microphone and sighed, his face full of sorrow. “Ning Yi, I treated you like a brother. I never thought you’d do something like this. The evidence is irrefutable. You should just confess.”
