Synopsis

"Eternal Words to Awaken the World" is one of the "Three Words" collection of ancient Chinese vernacular short stories ("Mingyan to Tell the World", "Words to Warn the World", and "Eternal Words to Awaken the World"). It was compiled and compiled by Feng Menglong, a famous writer and dramatist in the Ming Dynasty. The so-called "Hengyan" means "long-lasting and hard-to-easy words". Feng Menglong elaborates on its profound meaning in the preface: "If you practice it, you will not tire of it, and if you teach it, it will last a long time." It aims to convey the truth of eternal value through vivid and touching stories, so that the world's people can be alert and perseverant. The stories in the book have a wide range of themes and are rich and diverse in content. They include passionate eulogies of loyalty, filial piety, justice, integrity and friendship (such as "Three Filial Piety and Integrity Contribute to Property and Build a High Fame", "Two County Magistrates Compete for an Orphan Girl in a Righteous Marriage"), as well as wonderful descriptions of anecdotes and love legends (such as "The Oil Seller Monopolizes the Courtesan"), also contains profound revelations about the harsh world and the sinister nature of the human heart (such as Zhang Wei in "The Old Man Meets the Fairy at Night"), as well as the promotion of the ideas of karma and retribution, encouraging good and punishing evil (such as "The Yihu Sending Marriage at Dashupo"). Most of these stories come from the storybooks, legends, notes and folklore of previous generations. The language is simple and clear, the plots are twists and turns, the characters are vivid, and they are highly readable and appealing.
