The Short-Tempered Celestial Master Won't Talk

From Nangong Shang’s perspective:

After moving into his new home, Nangong Shang hears his next-door neighbor arguing with someone. The neighbor’s mouth is going a mile a minute, leaving no room for anyone else to get a word in. He assumes he’s got a short-tempered neighbor, only to discover that when they meet, the neighbor can’t speak.

Nangong Shang: “I know you can talk, so quit pretending to be mute! What’s with all the stomping? If you’ve got the nerve, curse me out!”

He expects to get an earful, but instead, the neighbor’s face turns red with anger and he grabs the broom at hand and swings it at him...

From the mute celestial master Xiao Chen’s perspective:

Ever since he was fifteen, Xiao Chen’s mouth has been plagued by trouble. Sometimes his teeth hurt so badly his mouth fills with blood; sometimes his gums swell and he can’t speak. Every now and then, his tongue gets involved too. He’s tried every doctor and remedy he can find, until Uncle Chen Si finally can’t take it anymore and takes Xiao Chen to see a master. The master says Xiao Chen’s mouth can only speak on Heaven’s behalf from now on. Otherwise, the backlash will never let up.

So, at fifteen, Xiao Chen becomes mute and devotes himself to learning the mystic arts under Uncle Chen Si. At eighteen, he’s driven out of the family home and told to make his own way, so he survives using the mystic arts he has learned.
