A Jianghu Prelude

Since ancient times, those without virtue or principle have occupied mountains as bandits; the righteous and benevolent have occupied them as kings; while those who embody virtue, principle, righteousness, benevolence, and wisdom have made them their home. Those of great virtue in the past are now petty villains; those once without honor now strive to make a living and look after themselves. Yet in times of chaos, the capable emerge in droves. Those who have found the Way hold fast to their true selves; those who have not simply follow the wind. Alas! What a pity! What a chaotic age!

Thus it is said:

The ancient Way collapses, old jade turns green,

New shoots break through the mottled old scene.

Northward I gaze, dreaming of the Central Plains,

My sword broken in the hills of Qi and Lu.

I pour wine for old friends beneath green plums,

A boat drifts idly across the clear water.

Let us wait until new shoots flourish,

And return together through misty streets when spring comes again.
