[Subverting the usual tropes, no courting death, no fighting the awful relatives, no career ambitions, opposites-attract couple]
I opened my eyes and found that I, a burned-out office worker from the 21st century, had become the spoiled female supporting character in a military-marriage novel, currently throwing a fit over a divorce.
Looking at the icy officer across from me, his shoulder insignia practically blinding, I immediately backed down. “Reporting in! I withdraw my divorce application!”
The original heroine was about to appear. According to the plot, I was supposed to drug her.
But I was busy making a pot of burnt porridge for my husband and spoiling my best friend with the original novel’s ridiculous ending.
Then one day, my officer husband cornered me in the kitchen. “I heard you’ve been telling everyone I’m ‘no good in bed’?”
I watched him undo the buttons on his uniform and swallowed. “A rumor! It’s absolutely a rumor!”
An alarm suddenly rang out. He fastened his belt and turned to leave.
My best friend and I high-fived. “Yes! All-night binge-watching!”
“Cough,” came a deep voice from the doorway. “Get double the fried chicken and beer.”
