Bright as the Moon, Too High to Reach

Bright as the moon, so high it cannot be plucked. Better to climb up and stand beside it.

[Female protagonist's perspective]

My mother died in childbirth, and my father was always stationed far away on the border. I was raised from childhood by my aunt, Consort Zhao.

My aunt and cousin treated me very well, and His Majesty was also very fond of me. At four, I was made a commandery princess.

At fourteen, my father was due to return. But what arrived before him was news of his death, along with word from a spy that he had taken a concubine and fathered a child on the border. That illegitimate daughter was two years older than me, and there seemed to be more to my mother's death than I knew.

I will uncover the truth!

[Male protagonist's perspective]

After my aunt died in childbirth, I brought my cousin into the palace and had her raised by my mother.

When I was eight, I asked my father, the emperor, to make my cousin a commandery princess. That way, she wouldn't have to live in fear in the palace in the future.

At eighteen, my cousin's father died in battle on the border. I had known all along that he had taken a concubine and fathered a child there. There was probably something suspicious about my aunt's death, too, but I couldn't bear to tell my cousin. Now the time has come.
