The Tangerine Falls

On a rainy night in December, Xie Suyin accidentally catches Wang Muyun injecting herself with deferoxamine in the infirmary. As the medicine bottle rolls away, the purple needle marks around her collarbone and the fatal figure on her diagnosis, “hemoglobin 60g/L,” rip the lie apart. She gets blood transfusions every week to fight iron poisoning, yet spends what little time she has left growing orange saplings that symbolize hope for the aurora. When Dong Xinyan cries, “You won't live to see the college entrance exams,” the shrill wail of the heart monitor announces that Wang Muyun has suffered sudden cardiogenic shock. Xie Suyin presses her bare hands against Wang Muyun's cold chest and screams, “You said the clouds carry their own light. Well, the light is right here! Just try putting it out!” To keep her dream of aurora research alive, a dream of “repairing the gene chain,” Xie Suyin transplants the dying orange sapling into a glass jar and turns it into an orange lamp emitting light at a wavelength of 557.7 nm. In the dead of night, its glow falls over the blood transfusion bag. Unconscious, Wang Muyun clutches the label on the medicine bottle beneath her pillow, where the code “Changbai Mountain Haike Pharmaceuticals - Aurora Project, JZGY batch number” is hidden. But a secretly taken photo of the basketball game, exposed by Zhang Churuo, sends their dependence on blood transfusions and the feelings between the two teenagers crashing together amid a hemoglobin crisis at 55g/L
