After Escaping the Loop, I Just Want to Be a Couch Potato

In 2049, a strange countdown appeared around the world all at once. Blood-red numbers appeared in the sky, beginning at 7 days, 0 hours, 0 minutes and counting down to “Humanity’s Extinction Day.”

Everyone thought that when the numbers reached “0 days, 0 hours, 0 minutes,” the end would come in the form of an asteroid impact, a viral outbreak, or machines awakening.

Then, one day, just as Lin Xiaoman took a hot coffee from the convenience store cashier, the drop of water her fingertip touched on the cup suddenly froze in midair. She watched the clock across from her stop at 23:59:53, while the countdown on her phone remained stuck forever at “0 days, 0 hours, 7 minutes.”

The world had not been destroyed. Instead, it had become “amber, frozen in time”: pedestrians running along remained caught mid-stumble, raindrops hung suspended in the air, and flames from an explosion looked like a strip of film paused in place.
