The Legend of the Cao Brothers from The Scroll Basket tells the turbulent story of the Cao family in Qingping Town, central Henan. The eldest son, Cao Baoshan, loves learning and is determined to travel to the capital to sit the imperial examinations and bring honor to his family. But his stepmother, Zhao, stops him, leaving him without travel funds. Fortunately, the kindhearted Cao Cangwa comes to his aid. Meanwhile, Zhao conspires with Jia Shan to poison Cao Lin and frame Zhang. To save his sister-in-law, Cao Cangwa takes the blame and is sent to prison.
