Days in Korea: Shi Tiezhu

At seventeen, Shi Tiezhu plunged the fire of his youth into the smoke of 1945. He fought his way through a hail of bullets on the home front, growing from a green young soldier into a man of steel. In 1950, with the cold winds along the Yalu River carrying the weight of duty to country and family, he crossed the river with his unit and etched his silhouette into the snow and artillery fire of the Korean battlefield.

His journey was never an easy one. There were brief respites after victories, and fresh charges after wiping his comrades’ blood away. He went from obeying orders and charging forward to leading his men through encirclements, growing from a rifleman into a commander who could shoulder responsibility. Through four years of bloody battles, from 1950 to 1954, he spent the brightest years of his life in the trenches defending his homeland and on the scorched earth of a foreign land. When he finally returned home, he brought back more than a body covered in scars: from the battlefields of liberation to the front lines in Korea, he had forged an epic coming-of-age through youth, courage, and loyalty.
