This is a sweeping novel about the struggle for power between the Ming dynasty’s Embroidered Uniform Guard and the Eastern and Western Depots. The story blends historical settings, power struggles, schemes and intrigue, personal growth, and bitter feuds, aiming to be grand in scale, complex, and compelling.
Historical Setting: Mid-to-late Ming dynasty. Imperial authority is in decline, factional strife is fierce, and secret-police politics have reached their peak.
Factions:
Embroidered Uniform Guard: The emperor’s personal guard, responsible for protecting the emperor, conducting surveillance and arrests, and interrogating prisoners in the imperial jail. It commands formidable military force, an intelligence network, and special judicial privileges. Representative: Lu Zheng, the protagonist, a young guard commander who later rises to chief commander. Upright yet well versed in political maneuvering, he struggles to survive between the factions.
Eastern Depot: Run by the eunuch most trusted by the emperor, such as the Chief Eunuch of the Directorate of Ceremonial. It oversees the Embroidered Uniform Guard and the officials, and its authority exceeds that of the Guard. Representative: Cao Zhengchun, or a similar figure, an old hand at scheming who craves power and sees the Guard as a thorn in his side.
Western Depot: Established and abolished at various times. When it exists, it wields even greater power, led by a young eunuch favored by the emperor, like Wang Zhi. Its methods are more ruthless and brazen, and its authority surpasses that of both the Eastern Depot and the Embroidered Uniform Guard. Representative: Yu Huatian, a peerless martial artist with boundless ambition and ruthless methods, who seeks to unite the Depots and the Guard and even encroach on imperial authority.
Imperial Authority: The emperor, or a young crown prince, is at the heart of every faction’s struggle and schemes. He may be incompetent, suspicious, or a mere figurehead.
The Civil Officials: Divided into factions of upright scholars and powerful ministers, they both collude and clash with the Depots and the Guard.
The Martial World: Its forces are drawn into the conflict or used by the various factions.
Very well written. Worth chasing
