Sighs in the Versailles Corridor

[Ensemble cast] [Western historical era] [Family and court] In the splendid corridors of the Palace of Versailles, glittering under the reign of the Sun King, Louis XIV, the daughters and female relatives of the de Montmorency family, or another similarly distinguished court family, bloom like roses vying for attention in a garden. Sophia is peerlessly gifted yet sensitive and melancholy, like fragile crystal. Charlotte is dignified and virtuous, the family’s hope for a politically advantageous marriage. Margaret is fiery and decisive, deftly navigating court intrigues. Elizabeth has turned away from worldly life in search of religious solace. And then there is their innocent young cousin, Emily… They struggle amid elaborate court etiquette, endless balls, secret affairs, and deadly games of power. Love is a bargaining chip, marriage is a transaction, and beauty and intelligence are weapons, though they can also become shackles. As undercurrents swirl around the changing of the monarchy, the family faces ruin for backing the wrong side, and the shadow of plague draws near, how will these “roses,” swept along by the tides of their age, bloom, and how will they wither into ashes? This is a vivid portrait of women’s lives at court, filled with extravagance, scheming, talent, and a fate they cannot escape.
