Synopsis

I spent half the night jawing with the autumn wind about old times, but all it did was blow through the holes in my jeans without saying a damn thing!

This book, to put it plainly, is a bit of wild speculation about transmigration, but I insist on writing it as if it were official history. Don't laugh!

Before I started writing, I racked my brains eight hundred times: Would this hold up? Could people in the old days really have done this? Would the neighbors hear it and call me a liar?

To figure out how Chu Yuan should bow when meeting the county magistrate, or how a man should wear his hair after his coming-of-age ceremony, I wore out the old account books left by my ancestors and ran my legs off asking the old temple keeper. I even wanted to pluck the City God’s beard to check its age!

Other people write transmigration stories and casually invent matchlock guns, blow up imperial palaces, and marry princesses, as easily as eating luosifen.

Not me! I peel back Baidu's disguise, type my query into that big obvious search box using pinyin input, or scour the library with my eight-thousand-degree nearsighted eyes. I don't put pen to paper until I've found the answer!

The imperial examination hall? A bead of sweat landing on the paper could make the ink run!

The streets and alleys? If the price of scallions, ginger, and garlic goes up by a single coin, the women will curse for half a street!

I've weighed these little details on a steelyard and measured them with a ruler, afraid that one wrong word might give me away and get me dragged before the King of Hell for questioning!

Someone says, “What's the point? It's just for fun!”

I grin. “Fun is important, but the bones of the story have to be solid too!”

I'd rather invent ten fewer tales about immortals than ruin the everyday texture of our ancestors' lives.

So when you open this book, you'll smell the sweat of young women in the late Ming, feel the patches on ordinary people's clothes, and hear the clack of abacus beads, the braying of donkeys, and that... final sigh of the Ming dynasty.

If you think I take my writing too seriously,

No melodrama, no distortion of history, and preferably no authorial agendas slipped in. Rebirth and transmigration are both fine. Are there any interesting Ming dynasty novels that aren't ridiculously over-the-top?
