Our Fates May Be Brief, But I Won't Forget You

I was born with a pomegranate blossom birthmark between my brows, a sign of more children, more blessings.

Because of it, the emperor betrothed me to a gravely wounded war god prince who lay unconscious.

On the second day after I married him to bring him good fortune, Chang Jiuyan miraculously woke up, and we consummated our marriage.

I soon became pregnant with twins, a boy and a girl.

But my younger half-sister stormed out of the house in a fit of anger, leaving behind a farewell letter. In the end, she died horribly in a bandit den.

That day, I was in labor, and every maid and midwife had been sent away from my side.

Chang Jiuyan gripped a knife and carved the birthmark from my forehead.

“A Yao bears the mark of a phoenix blossom, yet never shows off.”

“And you, with your mere pomegranate blossom, make sure everyone knows about it!”

“If not for that, how could you possibly have become the princess consort? Who do you think you are, to bear my children?”

Later, I died of a hemorrhage, and the babies died in the womb.

When I opened my eyes again, I was back on the day I was betrothed.

I cruelly scraped my forehead with a stone. “The birthmark is damaged and bleeding. It’s an ill omen. I fear I am not fortunate enough to bring the prince good luck.”

“My younger sister, Jiang Yao, also bears an auspicious birthmark. She is the perfect choice.”
