Five Years on the Rails: From Three Thousand to Five Hundred Thousand in Savings

Five Years on the Rails: From a Monthly Salary of 3,000 to Savings follows Lin Ye through five years of life working at the grassroots level of the railway system. During his internship in 2022, his pay structure was complicated: he received no wages for the first two months, and by the third month he was 1,800 yuan in debt. In 2023, he joined the Giant City Track Maintenance Section of Luosheng Railway Company. His monthly salary during probation was 4,200 yuan. After becoming a full-time employee, his stated pay went up, but deductions for performance reviews and hidden expenses left him with a net annual income of only 90,000 yuan. He worked hard to earn various professional qualifications, only to find their value declining and opportunities to use them for outside work restricted. When faced with a high-paying project in Africa, he weighed the risks and chose to lie flat within the system. He started side hustles by making use of workplace insurance rules and running data errands, saving 300,000 yuan over five years. Later, he won a workplace injury lawsuit and received 500,000 yuan in compensation, more than he had expected. He then began living a low-desire lifestyle. With precise financial figures and authentic industry details, the story depicts the pressures faced by grassroots workers and an individual's struggle under institutional discipline and the demands of survival. It does not judge the merits or flaws of the system, but simply presents the choices people make to get by, while preserving the dual meaning of the high-speed rail imagery.
