The land is as beautiful as a painting, yet riddled with countless ravines. Beyond the prosperous prefectural capitals and county towns lie endless ranges of mountains and wilderness. Life there is not as thrilling as storytellers make it out to be. Most days are spent working from sunrise to sunset, and nights pass quietly, filled with mountain winds, the chirping of insects, and occasional strange tales whose truth no one can say.
The elders often say that the mountains are too deep. Stay there long enough, and anything might become a spirit or a monster. The desolate hills and abandoned villages where nobody goes are especially rife with evil, and best avoided.
