Orphan from the Start: Gousheng was abandoned as a baby at the temple gate in Kaoshantun, a village in Northeast China. He grew up eating meals provided by the villagers and developed a knack for stealing chickens and dogs, until he unexpectedly gained the "protection" of the Yellow Immortal.
A Chicken-Stealing Adventure: At ten, he was caught red-handed stealing a chicken from Widow Liu, but escaped when a weasel spirit caused a commotion. From then on, he formed an unbreakable bond with the Yellow Immortal and became a "freak" in the villagers' eyes.
Reckless Youth: Young Gousheng and his childhood friend Tiedan stirred up trouble around the village. They peeked at girls bathing and stuffed dead rats into the village secretary's chimney, making Gousheng Kaoshantun's number one "menace."
Leaving Home to Make His Way: At eighteen, he was driven out of the village by residents who could no longer tolerate him. He headed for the city with Tiedan, but his lack of education left him with little choice but to swindle and cheat. By chance, he rescued Xiaotaohong, a foot-massage girl being hounded by debt collectors.

The Great Immortal Shows Its Power: Drawing on his special bond with the Yellow Immortal, Gousheng joined forces with the villagers to outwit the developers. At a crucial moment, the Yellow Immortal revealed itself and frightened off the demolition crew, saving Kaoshantun.
The Prodigal Turns Over a New Leaf: After everything he has been through, Gousheng finally reforms. He and Xiaotaohong open a farmhouse restaurant in the village, and the former "menace" becomes a pillar of strength protecting his hometown.
