I Planned to Go Undercover Until Retirement, but Somehow Became the Boss

The National Defense University selection exam. I thought it was a shortcut to graduating early and landing a secure government job.

Eight years later, I was second-in-command of the largest criminal syndicate in the Northwest.

The night the chairman was assassinated, the names of four candidates appeared on the conference room screen.

My photo was among them.

At three in the morning, I called the emergency number I hadn't used in eight years. “Operation codename: Abyss. Requesting an immediate sweep.”

There was a long silence on the other end. “Reason?”

I growled into the phone, “If we don't move now, I'll be their boss next month.”
