The Great Yu dynasty has endured for five hundred years, beset by one natural and man-made disaster after another. The central court continues to crumble under the combined weight of feudal warlords, powerful eunuchs, and popular uprisings.
Jin Baoyu is the illegitimate son of the landlord Jin Wanguan. Bright and shrewd from a young age, he passed the district examination as a teenager. But as disaster after disaster leaves the people starving in droves, even resorting to eating their own children, he puts down his writing brush and takes up the cause of saving them. He leads the people in reclaiming wasteland, raising livestock, hunting, and farming fish; building irrigation works, new homes, and cities; and training a new army. Drawing on the wisdom of two lifetimes, he creates all manner of goods, brings prosperity to the people, and protects his territory.
As the times grow increasingly turbulent, the central dynasty collapses completely. Eunuchs, powerful ministers, and aristocratic clans each seize control of their own territories, waging endless wars against one another and plunging the land into chaos. Foreign enemies invade, leaving barely one household in ten intact. Unable to bear the people’s suffering, Jin Baoyu resolves to save the realm, pacifying the interior and driving out the invaders. But the dynasty is rotten, and the people have suffered for far too long. With the empire on the verge of collapse and no other choice, he rises in rebellion and ultimately becomes a legend for the ages.
