In the 22nd century, "emotional tax" replaces currency. The rich buy the "happiness" of the poor to extend their lives and hoard their "anger" to wage war. The protagonist is an illegal [emotion hunter] who can steal emotions and use them materially (such as pinching "fear" into a dagger and weaving "love" into a body armor). But when he stole the "Despair" of a certain political figure, he found that there was a timetable for human extinction hidden in it.
