A Substitute Bride's Love Amid the Flames of War

Meng Lan, the illegitimate daughter of the Meng family, is forced to take another woman’s place and marry the young marshal of the Chen family. What looks like a marriage between powerful families is actually part of a political plot. The groom, Chen Dong, fails to appear on their wedding night, foreshadowing an unusual marriage. Life in the Chen household keeps Meng Lan on tenterhooks. She must conceal her identity as a reporter while dealing with the probing questions of the Chen family. Her secret investigation uncovers revolutionary leaflets in Chen Dong’s study, making her realize that the young marshal may have another identity. Chen Dong suddenly returns and quickly notices signs that someone has searched the room. Their first meeting is a battle of wits, with Meng Lan’s composure sharply contrasting with Chen Dong’s keen scrutiny. When Chen Dong realizes that Meng Lan has uncovered his secret, the two go from hostility to tentative cooperation. Together, they face the threats of the warlords and Japanese forces, and a subtle affection gradually grows between them amid the danger. Chen Dong is gravely wounded in an assassination attempt, and Meng Lan risks her life to save him. As she cares for him, they open up to each other about their ideals and pain, and their feelings quickly deepen. Facing a warlord’s siege, Chen Dong decides to send Meng Lan away to keep her safe. But she chooses to stay and fight by his side, transforming from a stand-in bride into a revolutionary companion amid a hail of bullets.
