Su Wanyue first met Lin Zhao at the Yun family’s estate announcement banquet.
The relatives were surrounding the man, mocking him and saying he had “no right to sit at the main table.” He wore a shirt washed pale with age, yet quietly slipped the cake in his hand to a stray cat in the corner.
On an impulse, she offered him a glass of complimentary red wine, only to hear him say, “This wine might go well with the new pickles from the sauce factory. I’m planning to buy that nearly bankrupt sauce workshop south of town next week.”
Only later did she learn that he hadn’t bought the sauce workshop on a whim.
The “gift for taste” awarded by the System let him improve his pickles until they became a nationwide sensation. The research institute he funded used the wine she blended in its experiments and actually developed a patented hangover cure. He even bought the Zuìyuè Pavilion where she worked, saying only, “The whole world should see my wife’s skill as a sommelier.”
When the Yun family elders knelt and begged him to take over the family business, Su Wanyue raised a glass of her latest creation. “Mr. Lin, can I join you in squandering the family fortune this time?”
He smiled and put an arm around her shoulders. “When my wife spends recklessly, it’s called investing. And our investment is the future.”
