When Buddha Falls, Demons Rise: The Legend of the Green Snake

The waters of West Lake are cold, and Leifeng Pagoda imprisons Bai Suzhen. In a fit of rage, Xiaoqing storms into Jinshan Temple and denounces the Buddha atop the lotus throne for being blind to justice.

The Buddha manifests and argues the law of cause and effect and reincarnation, then makes a wager with Xiaoqing: if she can change Fahai's tribulations, the two sisters will be freed; if she loses, her spirit and consciousness will be stripped away and sent into the cycle of reincarnation.

Bearing her memories, Xiaoqing returns to the time before Fahai takes his vows. At the Nine Ridges' Ghost-Crying Woods, the Jinguang Inn, and Fenghe Dragon Mountain, she helps him survive each calamity.

But the final trial falls upon her. She painfully bids Fahai farewell. The man who has always looked down on demons begs her to stay, but she hardens her heart.

The wager ends with Xiaoqing victorious, only for her to hear that Fahai has fallen to demonic ways.

A golden alms bowl can cover his head, but can it suppress the karmic fire in his heart?

Upon the lotus throne, how could the Buddha understand the depth of human love?

One chain of cause and effect, countless tangled bonds, all unfold in this fantastical tale of tribulation and love.
