Border Sentinel and Guide

The Ironridge Fortress outpost on the empire’s frontier receives an unwilling visitor: Bai Yu, an S-rank Guide, an elite academic with a prejudice against frontline Sentinels and a secret mission. There he meets Qi Feng, the outpost’s chief Sentinel, an “unnatural” S-rank who was altered through a secret military experiment. He is volatile and solitary, and his mental landscape imprisons a primal spirit form that doesn’t match the official records.

When a once-in-a-century beast tide attacks the frontier, the two S-ranks are forced to work together and display astonishing combat synergy. But the military orders them to form a bond, calling them the “optimal combat pairing.” During the bonding ceremony, which they both resist, Bai Yu discovers a black giant wolf deep within Qi Feng’s mental landscape, one that recognizes him as its master. Qi Feng, meanwhile, glimpses evidence of a secret experiment at the Guide Center in fragments of Bai Yu’s memories.

As controlled mutant beasts begin appearing in one border village after another, the two gradually uncover a far greater conspiracy behind the so-called beast tide: the “Phoenix Project” was never discontinued, and the military is working with the Guide Center to create controlled beast tides as biological weapons. As Qi Feng’s experimentally triggered killing instinct spirals out of control, and Bai Yu’s brother, the chief researcher long rumored to be dead, suddenly appears with the resistance, this Sentinel-Guide pair must choose between loyalty and the truth.
