Sand and stars At the end of the busiest bazaar in Baghdad lives a young woman named Laila. Her father was a poor carpet weaver, and her mother died of illness when she was ten years old, leaving only an old loom and a box full of unfinished colorful silk threads. Laila gets up before dawn every day and helps her father with the housework. After her father goes out, she sits in front of the loom and weaves colorful dreams with the silk threads left by her mother. As the days passed, Laila became a girl with a clever mind. The blankets she weaves are exquisite and the patterns are lifelike, and she is famous in the market. However, fate dealt her a heavy blow in the winter when she was sixteen. When my father went out to purchase wool, he accidentally fell down a hillside and broke his leg. He has been bedridden ever since. The burden of the family suddenly fell on Laila's weak shoulders. In order to pay for her father's medical bills and make ends meet, Laila had to work harder to weave carpets. She often stayed up late into the night, her eyes were bloodshot, and her fingers were thickly calloused by silk threads. But even so, the prices of the blankets she knitted at the market were getting lower and lower. Seeing that she was in urgent need of money, the cunning businessmen joined forces to lower the price. Laila had no choice but to accept it with tears. One day, Laila met a man in the market who claimed to be the palace steward. He told Laila that a grand banquet was being held in the palace and a batch of exquisite carpets were urgently needed to decorate the palace. He took a fancy to Laila's craftsmanship and was willing to pay a high price to order her rugs, but asked her to complete ten huge rugs within a month, each of which must be woven with dozens of layers.
