I Guarded the Border for Five Years, Only to Return and Find Someone Had Taken My Place

I guarded the border for five years, driving the barbarians back eight hundred miles and earning glorious military honors.

In the final battle, I was unexpectedly wounded. In a moment of crisis, I escaped by a clever ruse and made it seem as though I had died in battle.

I quietly returned to the capital, only to find the city gates filled with deafening drums and gongs and a throng of people.

Curious, I wondered which noble family was making such a grand entrance back into the capital.

The soldiers at the gate gazed at me with admiration. "The Xue family's female general has rendered great service to our country. Today, she returns victorious!"

My mind exploded.

I was the only female general in the Xue family.

Today was my triumphant return? How had I not heard about it?
