The Three Kingdoms was an era of divided rule and incessant upheaval.
Picking up where we left off, after the Battle of Red Cliffs, Wei, Shu, and Wu each held their own territory. The three states became locked in a fierce, complex, and protracted struggle, and for a long time, none could completely swallow the other two and reunify China.
Wei was based in the Central Plains and was relatively powerful. Shu and Wu launched repeated northern campaigns, but all ended in failure, and their strength steadily waned.
As the rising Sima clan gradually supplanted the Cao clan and seized real political power within Wei, the tide of victory slowly turned in Wei's favor, ultimately bringing about the fall of Shu. Sima Yan then replaced Wei with the Jin dynasty and went on to destroy Wu, achieving reunification.
The Three Kingdoms period was a history of a unified realm splitting apart, then coming back together again.
