Cheng Yi transmigrates to ancient times and becomes a live-in son-in-law.
His young wife is a peerlessly beautiful temptress, and his twin brother-in-law is a literary prodigy. He’s also a bit unhinged, insisting on taking the imperial exam in Cheng Yi’s place and passing the jinshi exam for his brother-in-law first.
How can he take the exam for him?
The brothers-in-law head to the exam hall together, but make an arrangement in advance: the young brother-in-law will take the exam for Cheng Yi under Cheng Yi’s name, while the academically hopeless Cheng Yi will use his brother-in-law’s name and take the exam for him in return.
So that’s how we’re playing it? Then Cheng Yi will have to give them a surprise too!
So when Cheng Yi and his brother-in-law both earn the rare honor of placing among the top three in the county, and both pass the exam to become scholars, the whole family is left dumbfounded.
Wait, they both passed the provincial exam too? They can’t keep cheating for each other. Why not?
Can’t say!
Huh? They both passed the jinshi exam too? What a fine son-in-law! We know you’re capable, but please, for the love of heaven, stop showing off. You can’t keep taking the exams! Why not? Still can’t say!
Then the younger brother-in-law is named the new top scholar by imperial decree after the palace exam, and is snatched up as a son-in-law right after the results are posted, becoming the emperor’s son-in-law. What a glorious moment!
But the news hits the entire Xie family like a death sentence. Everyone turns ashen. Cheng Yi, the live-in son-in-law, can’t understand why they’re unhappy about becoming part of the imperial family.
Only when his brother-in-law undresses in front of Cheng Yi and puts on a red wedding gown does Cheng Yi finally stare in shock and cry out:
What? So my brother-in-law and my wife are one and the same person? The Xie family never had twins at all. You’re their only daughter?
A female top scholar? A female royal consort?
If they’re exposed, the whole family will be executed right after she’s become top scholar. What do we do? Answers, please!
What are you waiting for? Cheng Yi, get in there and subdue the princess who just walked through the door!
The princess reveals her true identity as an empress. Tell me, are you surprised? Did you see that coming?
