The Sequel to Dream of the Red Chamber 2

Dream of the Red Chamber: The Sequel

After “a vast expanse of whiteness, the whole world left clean,” the once-grand Jia household, where bells rang and lavish feasts were served, lies in ruins. Yet it is also the beginning of a new story. Taking the original ending of Dream of the Red Chamber as its starting point, this tale follows the scattered lives of Jia Baoyu, Li Wan, Qiaojie, and others after the family is confiscated, painting a sweeping portrait of people struggling to survive after the fall of a feudal clan.

After the confiscation, Baoyu awakens from his daze to face the devastation of the Jia household, where the family tree has fallen and the monkeys have scattered. His closest kin are separated, and the servants disperse. With help from Prince Bejing and the few old acquaintances still hanging on, he struggles to survive. Li Wan fights to get by while caring for the frail Qiaojie, and Ping'er runs about everywhere, protecting the Jia family's last surviving heir amid hardship. Jia Yun is pursued on trumped-up charges, but is rescued by Xue Baoqin, who returns after marrying far away. The scattered Twelve Beauties of Jinling each meet their own fate: Xiangyun struggles through hardship, Yingchun dies young, Tanchun crosses the seas, and Baochai tries to rewrite Lessons for Women in Jinling.

The story carries on the tragic theme of “a thousand beauties weep, ten thousand lovelies grieve,” while delving deeper into the characters' will to survive and emotional bonds in desperate circumstances. Through scenes such as the ruined Grand View Garden and the overgrown Lotus Fragrance Pavilion, it highlights the stark contrast between the splendor of prosperous times and the desolation of a world in turmoil. Baoyu's memories of the past and the shifting fortunes of the women explore humanity's resilience and helplessness. Amid sweeping historical upheaval, it composes a lament for the final days of the feudal aristocracy, while searching among the ashes for the faint but undying light of humanity.
