In 1929, Gu Zhenji, a rare-book restoration specialist at the Commercial Press in Shanghai, was caught up in a crackdown on intellectuals while founding a left-wing magazine with his schoolmate Shen Mozhi. The cultural celebrity Ding Jiu was killed on the spot. In the aftermath, several events erupted at once: workers launched a massive strike to protest the brutal treatment of workers at Japanese-owned cotton mills, while students and cultural organizations offered their support. At the same time, Inoue Kiyohiko, Gu Zhenji's former teacher from his years studying in Japan, arrived in Shanghai with a hidden agenda. Thus began a war on the cultural front.
Very much looking forward to future updates. The writing is beautiful, the story is vivid, and the characters are good. Getting better. The righteousness of the world is subject to vicissitudes of life, the hatred of the country and the hatred of the family, and the character of the literati are all well reflected in the novel.
A good book worth reading👍
