A Poor Student's Journey to a PhD

A Record of a Doctor's Journey from a Poor Family tells the story of a couple who, at a snowy wedding in the 1980s, welded a marital bed from machine-tool scrap and drew a make-believe kitchen on the hallway wall in chalk. In doing so, they quietly embarked on a twenty-year battle to break through educational barriers. From a six-watt desk lamp made from a shell casing to Zeno's paradox demonstrated with a bicycle wheel, from Montessori-inspired lessons at the market to passing a knowledge basket during the SARS lockdown, they turned metal shavings from the workshop into magnetic field lines, used tears to demonstrate the principles of optics, and even transformed a birth defect in the left ear into an opportunity to learn about neural compensation.

In years of extreme material scarcity, this ordinary family used astonishing creativity to turn every hardship into a unique educational setting. They mapped the distribution of educational resources in the cramped confines of an apartment block, explained three-dimensional coordinates with basins and buckets catching rain on stormy nights, and ran food-allocation experiments when grain prices fluctuated. With the simplest materials, they found the most ingenious ways to break down complex knowledge. Every creative use of old calendars and pirated books, every battle of wits with the education system and the hardships of daily life, speaks to an ordinary family's boundless yearning for knowledge and their dogged pursuit of it.

This is more than a story about growing up. It is also an ode to all the educators who have struggled to break through adversity. When formal education falls short, life itself becomes the most vivid classroom, and the sparks of wisdom forged under the pressures of an era will one day light the way for the next generation.
